Exotic Pet Vaccinations
Vaccines prevent illness by triggering antibodies against infection of the disease. If a pet is ever exposed to the real disease, the immune system has a memory of it ,and knows what to do to fight it.
Depending on the product, vaccines may contain trace amounts of the killed or inactive virus, or modified viruses. The goal is to build the strongest, most robust immunity possible, for as long as possible, and inactive vaccines are the most common method of delivery.
Narrowing the Scope
There are many different types of exotic pets, and numerous ways to approach their specific needs. All exotic pets, regardless of species and owner experience level, benefit from routine examinations with an exotic pet veterinarian. We can help ensure their husbandry needs are met in order for them to fully thrive in captivity.
Reptiles and guinea pigs are perceived as relatively low-maintenance when it comes to vaccinations. Some reptiles may need the herpes virus vaccination, whereas guinea pigs do not require any routine shots. That said, they may need to be spayed/neutered and have their teeth and nails tended to a few times a year.
Small and Furry
Rabbits may be vaccinated to prevent myxomatosis and RHDV2, or rabbit hemorrhagic disease. Both can be extremely dangerous to rabbit health if contracted, but the vaccinations can make infection less severe.
Fine and Feathered
Polyoma, a virus that can be fatal in birds, can be prevented with a quick, inexpensive vaccination. While parrots and budgies are the breeds most affected, canaries and finches can also carry the disease. Treatment can be expensive and slow; preventing polyoma is the best option.
Other avian vaccinations include avian influenza and chlamydia.
Puzzle Pieces
Many illnesses affecting exotic pets, such as ferrets, can be prevented with the following vaccinations that cats and dogs commonly receive:
- Rabies
- Distemper
- Leptospirosis
